Getting from Giesing to Unterhaching, S5 problems - Munich

S5 S-bahn damaged?

Unknown Variable
Hello All,
I'm here in Munich on business and staying in Unterhaching. I've been taking the S5 into work every day without incident until last night. On my way back to the hotel (S5 from Ostbahnhof to Unterhaching) My wife and I got to giesing and then shuttled off the train. Obviously there was some sort of announcement but my German was not up to the task of deciphering what the meaning was. When I asked a fellow passenger how we were to get back to unterhaching, he said by bus. Well my wife and I tried to understand the bus schedule, but after a while that task plus the fact some of our fellow passengers decided to block bus traffic from even leaving the station (the poliezeit were called and someone got arrested) cause my wife and I to go hire a cab.

Does anyone know what the problem is on the S5 and when/if it will be functional? something was still wrong this morning because I had to get off @ giesing again this time going north towards ostbahnhof. interestingly going out form unterhaching is not as bad as going back because I can take ubahns from giesing. If anyone has a clue what is going on OR if you have some other way of going to unterhaching I'd appreciate the help.

Thanks
leeza
There were a few problems on the whole S-Bahn network last night and this morning. Usually it is pretty darn reliable.

At this here website, there is up to date information on where problems are occurring, but only in German, I am afraid.

For the most part, they manage to fix problems within half a day or so, so theoretically it could be working fine again this evening, but who can say.

Can't find anything on the mvv website at the moment, next week there is work going on on the platforms between Weßling - Herrsching, and the elevator at Giesing is out of action - but there's nothing else flagged up.

there was an announcement on the radio this morning but i wasn't paying attention to what caused the problem.

edit: the link Leeza provided says that there are still currently delays on the whole network caused by previous problems at the Ostbahnhof and Haar. It doesn't say what they were though.

Some problem with the switch mechanism at Ostbahnhof.

And some "Personenschaden" (usually suicide) in Haar as well. Came to work 45 min. late.

Anyone know whether this "switching problem" has been repaired yet?

I just checked the Sbahn website, it appears that everything is running as normal. Having said that, due to the thunderstorm you never know when a new problem might arise or there might be slight delays.

But you've already figured out the best plan B - get to Giesing (either with the S5, S6 or U2) and either take a bus or taxi from there if the S5 isn't running properly.

...shuttled off the train... When I asked a fellow passenger how we were to get back to unterhaching, he said by bus... tried to understand the bus schedule
In situations like this, special buses are often laid on to replace the S-Bahn. However, it can take a while to set up and there is no particular schedule. If you have no alternative plan, you need to follow the purple SEV (Schienenersatzverkehr, rail replacement traffic) signs to the bus stop. These buses then follow the route of the S-Bahn, stopping near each station, which can take ages. Depending on the time of day, there may not be enough space on the bus(es) for everyone.

Part of the problem may stem from contruction issues in Unterhaching until the 24th of July. This popped up on the MVV site for travel between Unterhaching and Giesing:

My German is bad, but it appears that the temporary station to use (presumably to catch a bus?) should be on Albrecht-Dürer-Straße in Unterhaching. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything about where to catch a bus in Giesing though.

Ask your hotel desk to call MVV for better info:
