Why don't Germans have double bed mattresses?

They only seem to have single ones

Hah... my husband used to think he liked soft beds, until he spent some time on a firm mattress and found that he didn't have as many aches and pains in the morning. In our house, you'd be relegated to the oldest pull-out couch, since all our beds are firm. Ever thought of just placing different types of lattenrost underneath the mattress? You get a medium mattress and one side gets a springy lattenrost underneath to make it softer, and the other side gets a firm one.
I know a firm support matress will give me less aches and pains,I know, but getting into a bed that rolls you into the semi-fetal position as soon as you lie down with huge feather filled pillows --- bliss

Must be all the time spent in sleeping bags using my jacket as a pillow I suppose.

To all the disbelievers in TT lalala land…. Most Germans have the 2 mattress-system hardwired into the brain. Of course it's possible to buy the large double ones, but it's NOT usual.
No, MOST Germans go for personal taste (soft vs. firm), Kingsize, Queensize.... just have a look to the big mail order catalogs

No, MOST Germans have a 2 mattress system hardwired into the brain. This is a fact.

bagatelle, I'm having a slow day today, so I clicked around a bit on those web sites. I didn't see a single mattress being offered in the 2mx2m size, with most of them only being offered up to 160cm wide. You've proven the point that Germans prefer having two smaller mattresses rather than one large one.

My personal theory is that after the war when consumer goods were scarce, it was easier and more efficient to just make a very limited number of smaller sizes. The factories didn't need to be equipped with larger machines to make the larger mattresses, they could churn out more smaller units faster, transportation to the point of sale was easier, and folks could more easily carry or cart them away. So Germans had to "make do" with using two smaller mattresses for their double beds, and it just kinda became the "proper" and "expected" way of doing things.

Sometimes I wonder how they ever made the transition away from straw mattresses held up by rope.

Agree with Bipa there..
habit formed out of necessity. and soon that translates as normal
i guess the system has it's uses among bedmates where personal tastes are wildly different, but i couldn't understand for ages why every german b&b/holiday apt had these separated mattresses by default. both mattresses exactly the same, yet separated by a crack! the crap about not disturbing the other whilst turning in bed doesn't hold.

have come to accept them the germanic way of life. nevertheless - i, for one, still HATE 'em!

It is not that difficult to find one:

Krieg, I must say that at times you do a wonderful imitation of an idiot.
Guess you missed my previous post in this thread, #41.

Now go take a look at the three web sites provided by bagatelle, and find me a 2mx2m mattress.
m23
..and who said it's that difficult to find.
except on MOST german beds
bagatelle
@bipa, m23 - OK, what do I know? I'm only German and know only people with queen and king size beds, who happen to be Germans as well. But certainly I do not know MOST Germans, so you guys are right.

Two matresses in a double bed establish order because you know exactly how much space you have for yourself and how much space your partner has or if s/he is already on your side.
SebAus
Wow, would love to share a bed with you... a true romantic at heart huh?
Steven192
Do the Americans still do that 2 matressess, one on top of the other, thing on their beds?

Lower one with the springs and then one on top that you actually sleep on.

Funniest thing I've read all day and the ulitimate answer to the original question.

From Neckermann: http://www.neckermann.de/on/demandware.sto...opcgid=10008526

I might be an idiot but I know how to browse a site.

OK, you get one point for Otto, but this is what it says at the Neckermann site:

Ab der Größe 160 x 200 cm werden 2 Matratzenkerne mit einem hochwertiger Doppeltuchbezug umschlossen, so dass eine durchgehende Liegefläche entsteht. Die berühmte "Besucherritze" ist somit passé. Sie können ab Größe 160x200 cm individuell wählen: 2x Härteklasse 2, 2x Härteklasse 3 oder je 1x Härteklasse 2 und 3.

Besucherritze...brrrr!

EDIT: Ooops, spoke too soon. If you dig deeper into the Otto link they'll tell you:

In den Größen 160/200 bis 200/200 liefern wir jeweils 2 Matratzenkerne und einen durchgehenden Bezug.
