According to reports in the press easyJet is starting a Manchester to Munich service four times a week from November 6, 2009.
Currently only Lufthansa Cityline serves Munich-Manchester.
easyJet prices to follow but they will be peanuts for first few months.
Also Germanwings are to fly Cologne to Manchester later in the year replacing TUIfly.

Fantastic news. That could alter all my plans for the end of the year.

my mate who works for EJ has been putting the Munich Manchester route in the suggestion box for about 5 years!
brill brill brill.
hope she gets to work the route!

Let's hope it's a year round route as well and not just Winter. Stansted and Edinburgh with Easyjet are now relatively pricey so this could be a real result. There have been cheap carriers running this route before though and they stopped/went bust. Better luck this time...

times will be important to me. Hopefully there is an evening flight on Friday and an early flight on Monday. If it is midday it is not so useful

Sorry, yes - SABENA. A Belgian airline who offered the best rates when I was heavily using their services between Manchester and Munich about 8 years ago until they went bust iirc they charged £100-£150 max for the flight. Then it was good old LH or BA after that which would charge £220-£250.
Pas
01.Jul.2009 11:54 hrs
Which may be why they went bust...

Will they really fly into Manchester?? its an expensive port to land at!
Surely Liverpool would be a better port for them as the already have a huge presence there..
Bring back V-wing.. NOT!
UrbanAngel
01.Jul.2009 11:56 hrs
Hmm let's see:
The reasons for SABENA's bankruptcy are numerous. One of the direct causes was Swissair not living up to their contractual obligations and failing to inject necessary funds into the company. This was because at the time Swissair was having its own financial problems, and could not compete with its rival airline Sabena and other competitive airlines like easyJet. During the so called "Hotel agreement", signed on July 17, 2001, Belgian prime minister Guy Verhofstadt met with Swissair boss Mario Corti, who agreed to inject €258 million into SABENA. Mr Corti had make a terrible mistake as the sum was never paid, due to Swissair's own financial problems. The purchase of 34 new Airbus planes, imposed by the Swiss, was a burden SABENA could not cope with.
After the bankruptcy, a parliamentary commission in Belgium was established to investigate the demise of the airline. The Belgian politicians got a part of the blame but no minister was called by name. Swissair itself went bankrupt in October of that year.
Oh yes, here we go:
Another reason was because UrbanAngel milked this route for all it was worth because it was much cheaper than using other airlines.
Cool, I'm in Wiki!

Not sure about that SpiderPig.
Easyjet will be flying 14 routes from Manchester by the end of this year and they have only been flying from MAN for about a year now after saying it was too expensive. But MAN has reduced costs and is in the process of turning terminal 3 into a low cost terminal. Easyjet have flying from Liverpool for over five years and fly about twenty one routes. Ryanair have flying from Liverpool for longer than that and fly about 40 routes but now fly about 11 routes from Manchester (8 in the last year alone). So MAN can't be that expensive to fly from and as a guess I would say Easyjet will be flying more routes out of Manchester than Liverpool within the next five years!

I wouldn't hold my breath that they are going to serve the route long term tbh.
Munich Cardiff and Munich Bristol didn't last. :-(

Maybe your parents had other reasons not to visit. Last week friends of mine booked flights
during Oktoberfest from Manchester and back for £99 each including all fees, which considering the lack of hidden costs and the level of service offered compared to Sleasyjet seems very reasonable to me.

Just checked that out for the first weekend in Nov and with a hold bag and Speedy Boarding it came to about €20 less than Lufthansa, think i'll stick with the airline I know.

Don't bother with Speedy Boarding though.. you get on a bus anyway so everyone loses whatever priority they may have had!

Considering the much better service when things go wrong (quite likely weather-wise at that time of year) as well as the much larger number of flights to choose from with Lufthansa, the EasyJet price would have to be a LOT lower to be worthwhile. Otherwise it's a false economy.

Speedyboarding was fun yesterday coming back to Munich from Stanstead. Plane as 1hr late, was a real scrum at the game to get on the plane. Speed boarding my arse. Best were the germans who paid for it, they seemed to think it entitled them to some kinda of red carpet treatment.

06.Jul.2009 14:14 hrs
We've never bought speedy boarding but after the first couple of times of flying by easyjet we've just decided that its easier to let everyone else fight to get on. If we end up sat together cool, if not? Well its an hour or so and we can live with not being in skin contact for that long. At the end of the day you are going to have a seat. It might be next to a big tattooed bloke who snores. Sorry about that, I'll try to stay awake.

But there is never a lot of room next to the stewardesses on those little seats at the front of the plane

The seat front row on the right works just the same;-)
For all the complaining about Easyjet they do have some of the hottest stewardesses of any airline.

The lufthansa flights Munich-Manchester-Munich are also bookable from the lufthansa.co.uk address for 74 pounds (87ish euros), saving the 10 euro service charge.

Unless you live here and have your Miles and More card registered, tried that and it won't let me book from .co.uk
gordonthemoron
08.Jul.2009 07:15 hrs
I think that if you change your registered address on the miles & more card back to the UK it will work
Small Town Boy
08.Jul.2009 07:36 hrs
You don't have to book through the Miles & More account. As long as you have a UK-based credit card, you can book through lufthansa.co.uk. Stick your M&M card into the machine at check-in to get the miles credited (although it's so few it's hardly worth bothering with anyway).

08.Jul.2009 09:10 hrs
What do you mean by UK based?
My account is in the UK but the address for posting is in Germany. I'm guessing that won't work?
In these days of the single market how come they are allowed a 10 pounds difference between the euro price and the pound price on a 100 euro flight?
Small Town Boy
08.Jul.2009 09:24 hrs
You can book on .co.uk if your billing address is in the UK.
Failing that, look on kayak.com (the American site, not de.kayak.com) and book in dollars through an American website like Orbitz or Expedia.com. This may even come in slightly cheaper than the British Lufthansa website. You can use a German billing address on these websites.
YorkshireLad6
08.Jul.2009 10:33 hrs
I do this regularly with Lufthansa. You can book on the UK website if you have a UK address (or are capable of making one up). You pay in GBP, it does not matter where the credit card is registered (I have a UK card registered at my German address that works fine and saves currency conversion charges), you don't need to permanently register with them and you you don't pay additional booking fees as with the German site. The flight routing is also irrelevant (so you can book return flights originating in Munich). You can even enter a German contact phone number. If you have a Miles&More account on the German site you can call it in later to attach it to the booking, or when you check in.

Cheers , will give that a go then as those are some very attractive prices. Perhaps Lufthansa need to start talking about making people stand on their flights or free blowjobs on the international flights to gain some publicity?

So you are not capable of making one up or borrowing a friends address? Nothing is sent to that address - it can be anyone anywhere.

I recognise that YL6 but I also have no bank accounts in the UK so the charge made to my German Euro account from a GBP transfer will more than offset any €10 gain.
I probably didn't express my point well enough.

And realistically 10 quid's not a lot unless I take both kids. Would be nice to get the best deal though.
Looked at Orbitz and for the same flights as I looked at from lufthansa.co.uk they were charging 170 dollars (about 100 squid) so that route probably needs a bit more work finding the cheapest tickets.

OK i have never heard of Jet2.com because i never really fly anywhere and i cant have much of a look at their site because my internet connection is utter crap at the moment.
Anyway if its any use to anyone, my mum has just booked a return flight from Manchester to Munich at a travel agents for 60GBP. Im asuming its cheaper on the net but i cant look due to my connection at the moment. Anyway the Travel Agent told her they are only running flights for the ski season starting From Nov.
