Where to break a €500 note - Berlin

Tips on places that will accept these

Go Gadget
i need to break a 500 euro note, can you juist do this in a supermarket?
switchblade
how bout a bank...
Go Gadget
they are shut now, i need to do it now ya see
eurovol
Most supermarkets will not do that and all stores will not do it without you buying something. If you have a local bank then use them because they are less likely to charge you a stupid fee. As most people who have watched SNL will know, the Change Bank is pure fantasy!
Go Gadget
ok thnkas for reply. to be more detailed a si should have done at the start, i am happy to buy soemhting, though not that much, but i just wanna know who will accept a 500, seeing as in the past i even got gasps of shock form checkout ladies when paying with a 50

Try the Starbucks at the Brandenburg gate I broke a €100 note there on a doppel espresso. They get a large influx of tourist as well as money oh butt they might be closed right now.
eurovol
Well, Go Gadget Go to the Hbf and good luck!

Go to your nearest major discounter (but not first thing in the morning!) and do your normal food shopping - it shouldn´t be a problem to pay with a €500 note.
What the discount stores are NOT allowed to do is simply change your money for you.

(and if all else fails, you can give it to me!)
murphaph
Exactly. Lidl etc. will happily take your 500 off you for normal shopping and give you back change. I find IKEA will also take large notes without batting an eyelid.

Pay attention people.

Pay attention people.

Then why did Go Gadget even bother to ask at 8.50pm???!!!

Because GoGadget is in Berlin and I have heard tell that in that far-off magical land, not all shops slam their doors shut at 7.59.

It's twue, it's twue!

Wow, 7:59pm? I went into a small Edeka at 7:45pm and was told to hurry up they were closing the store for the night and I was making all of them work past the appointed hours. All the clerks wanted me out asap.

I have seen people on Monday morning cashing out of Aldi with 500 Euro. They bought about 100 euro or more though.
RNH
Well this is all old news now as you wanted to break in to this 500 note last night. But the question is why were you so urgent to break in to it - the answer? - most probably cos you wanted to go out to a bar or a restaurant??? - they probably could have dealt with it!
JeffZ
Must be a crap Edeka, then (they're all independently owned and operated). I nip into the place across the street from me regularly at 7:55 p.m. to pick up a liter of milk or a couple beers and nobody ever says anything. The Kaisers two blocks down is open until 10 p.m., and the one over on Neue Kantstr. is open until midnight.

[sub]Unfortunately, none of them have decent Schnitzengruben[/sub]

Another idea, assuming you have a bank account: Many banks have ATMs where you can deposit cash. Do this, then withdraw smaller bills from the ATM.
keepingtime
That's the way it should be. Yes it is a very small Edeka, but what are they about? I was embarrassed and had not gone back to them for a while and gone down to Lidl. I just could not believe they said that and figured the store does not need my money if they can not accommodate their local customers.

Most store owners have clerks do preclosing all night so they do not have much to do when closing time does come and I would think most would welcome a sale at this time with the recession.

I work for one of the leading discounters, and our staff are only paid until 20.15 .
There is no extra payment, even if the store is full of people at 20.00, so yes, we do make a habit of politely asking people to make their way to the check-out as soon as the clock strikes 20.00 (company policy doesn´t allow us to do so earlier!!)

You and your coworkers may want to have a look at a little law called the AZO (Arbeitszeitordunung). It's illegal not to pay employees -- in cash &/or equivalent time off depending -- for time worked. This applies to salaried workers as well as wage slaves.

As to the €500 note, no one wants them because they're so commonly counterfeited and difficult to break. No one wants to keep €1000 in cash on hand just in case some numbnuts comes in to buy a 42-cent thing of cottage cheese and wants to pay with a €500 note. Unless you're using the whole damned note (buying a TV, for example), tell the fucking bank to give you normal denominations: €50 or smaller. At the bar I normally won't even take 100s, and during O'fest I control every €50 note heavily, catching at least a couple bad ones each week.

Just think about how much cash on-hand someone has to have to be able to break a large note, and think about how great a security risk that is. A lot of insurance policies won't cover the loss through robbery or theft of more than a few hundred euros.

A cashier in <major discounter> STARTS with €400 in their float. They can easily take 4k+ each in a shift so breaking a 500 isn't as big a deal in a busy branch as one might think. A discounter is not going to turn down perfectly good money when they have at least 15k+ in change in the safe anyway. They'd be shot for turning down good money for the sake of getting change from the safe.
robinson100
Just because a till cashes up 4K in a shift does not mean that the cashier has access to it!
(pay attention next time you go shopping!)

I have seen a number of Tankstellen where they have notices stating that they do not accept 500 Euro notes...

CASINOS are very accommadating

Well managing a coffee shop in the states it was a known tactic of of counterfeiters to come in right before closing say 5 minutes, order 4 or five drinks, and try to pay with a hundred. They would always say can you take a hundred and we would say no. About 99% of the time they gave you no fuss and got the hell out of there because they wanted no attention drawn on them. There occasional would be someone trying to say something like its illegal not to take currency(which it is) but we would retort "Sure let us check the bill" . Which quickly ended the discussion with their response "Im not dealing with this or I will go to whoever". These rings keep in contact with each other , inform each other on which shop gave no hassle, or tried to return a few months later to try the same trick.

The sad thing was that is was usually tweakers that bought the bill in hopes for a quick score. I was always cool with the local homeless giving them odd jobs and they would always let me know who was bad news or who was shooting up in the restroom. Unfortunately heroin and meth are the drug of choices in the Pac NWest.

And a single €500 note will clear them out. Good money practices as well as the insurance I also mentioned require them to continually remove the notes so that there's less to steal and less chance of it.

Heroin's fine; junkies stay calm and quiet. It's the meth heads who are dangerous, noisy and downright bizarre. And scary. Little bothers me but meth teeth give me the heebie-jeebies.

mission accomplished folks, stroke off genius was to walk down orianienberger strasse and ask one of the ladies seeking gainful employment there if they could change it. they were more than happy to oblige, though she took 10 percent as commision. Still she was extraordinarily friendly and she ended up seducing me. This ia one of those things i read about happening to other people, you know what I mean. Its a mad world

My point was that there's thousands in the safe and they'll be able to change a 500.
robinson100
There might well be money in the safe, but if it´s time-locked you do not have access to it :-(

hand job or full sex? If its a hand job then standard rate however if fully sex you did well. Taking the 10% charge for changing €500 means you paid €50.
Go Gadget
you mean she took the 50 as payment for sex?
jayhamburg
did you get sex? then yes you paid €50 for sex, well done.
