It's called a Mini Gmbh or "Unternehmergesellschaft (haftungsbeschränkt)" oder "UG (haftungsbeschränkt)".
You have not taken much bother with your request - why do you imagine you'll get folk bothering to reply to you?

...and then you have Gewerbesteuer (Corporation tax) which you don't have as a Freiberufler (Freelancer)

Yeah, it is a UG and you can start it with only €1 but the fees to do so run a bit higher into the couple thousand range. Basically with this you have to promise to sock away 25% for the further development of the company until you can afford the 25k for a full GmbH (certain circumstances allow less). There is actually a nice Wiki article about it.

...and then you'll have to mombo dogface to the banana patch. But don't tell them I told you, it's supposed to be a secret...

there is a company where you can buy such a UG fully established with charter and bank account and all that and then you'll just transfer the place of business. Check GoAhead or Foratis for this, costs 500-600 Eur but you have something to work with right away.

Where in Munich can one go to research the original documents of a small GmbH once established in May 1970 in Munich?

What do you need to know? The
Bundesanzeiger allows the download of public documents such as company formation, articles of association (and any changes made) and recent accounts, sometimes for a small fee.

Another option is the opening of a UK ltd company. You will increasingly see ltd companies in Germany.
