Sights to see in a day, Munich

Looking for tips for a day in Munich

Timemistress
Hi everyone,

I'm moving to Munich at the end of August, and so I know what things look like, my mum, brother and I are coming over for the day to check it out. I'm going to be doing boring stuff like checking out where I'm going to work, live, etc. but my mum and brother will have a lot of time to hang around and I want to be able to send them off to entertain themselves. Is there anything/anywhere that anyone would particularly recommend for this? I was thinking about the Deutsches Museum, but anything really. Mum would like shopping, but not sure about my brother... Oh, and they don't speak German, if that changes things.

Thanks everyone! I'm planning to come to the meetups at some point, so looking forward to meeting some of you...

Olympiaberg, and Park is a nice walk around.
Odeonsplatz bis Marienplatz is a pricey walk for shopping, but your Mum should like it.
I recommend the Brandhorst Museum, or Modern.
and afternoon stroll through Englischer Garten, and if it happens to be a Wednesday Evening or Sunday Night, they could join the Ult. Frisbee game.
Your brother may enjoy BMW Wlt, near Olympiapark.

thats just a couple of Ideas.

Not sure if your parents would be up to it, but I found Mike's Bike Tours a good 4 hours sightseeing

I would also recommend Mikes Bike Tours as I did it the very first day I visited Munich. It gives an excellent taster of most of the places round the Altstadt as well as the English Garden and the cycling is anything but arduous.

If you MUST walk I'd recommend starting at Sendinger Tor, visiting the Asamkirche then walking on to Marienplatz and then over to the Victualienmarkt. Climb the Tower of Alter Peter, Munich's oldest parish church, for spectacular views of Munich and, if you time it right a birds eye view of the Glockenspiel on the Rathaus. Then walk up to the Residenz and Odeonsplatz before entering the Hofgarten and walking through that to the Englishgarten, check out the surfers an the Eisbach!, finishing up at the Chinesischer turm biergarten. All in all, if you get a sunny day, that is a lovely walk that gives you the flavour of all the best bits of Munich.

Hi everyone,

thanks for the replies! All those ideas sound good. I know my brother would love the bikes and Ultimate, so will keep those in mind when he's over on his own. The walks sounds perfect though - thanks Bell the cat!

Hi everyone,

I was thinking about the Deutsches Museum,
That alone can take up the whole day although I recommend it when you have time. Also the walk around there is so nice . Enjoy and good luck.

Bell the Cat's walk sounds about right, but don't forget to take a look in the Frauenkirche. They have an elevator up to the tower if your mom isn't up to climbing the 306 stairs in Alte Peter.

I've done the New Munich walking tours (http://www.newmunich.com/nm/) before and found that to be quite interesting. It's very history heavy so for the more ADD inclined I would recommend a bike tour. I haven't done a Mike's one, but I hear they are worth it. An alternative is Discover Munich Bike Tours (http://discovermunich.net/). They go to similar sights and it's easier on the history and more focused on the fun. Discover Munich is tip based rather than up front paid. Both tours take you to the English garden for a meal, and that's always nice.
