Installation of fiber optic cables - Munich

What does it mean for us?

Red
In my neighborhood, SWM is currently digging up the sidewalks and installing fiber optic cables. Their pamphlets claim that this will pretty much eliminate electrical blackouts and significantly increase internet speed. As far as I understand, the current cabling inside buildings will not be changed.
Does anyone know what we can expect from this change? Can internet speed really increase so much if the building is still using old wiring? Will internet users need to subscribe to new high-speed plans in order to see an increase in speed?
I currently am subscribed to a high-speed DSL line and am surely not getting speeds even close to what they claimed I would... hoping that maybe this will change despite the copper wiring inside the building.

IFAIK, SWM has a very extensive Fiber optic network, as does E-ON. However I have not heard of either company actually
offering internet services to end users. These networks/cables are usually exclusively rented out to other telecoms providers.
Perhaps DT will be renting some of those new SWM cables for its VDSL service..

Isn't M-Net part of SWM?
Edit: it seems so if SWM means Stadtwerke München:

Hinter M-net steht ein starker und etablierter Gesellschafterkreis: Stadtwerke München...

Perhaps, buts its still treated as 2 different companies.. SWM owns/installs the cable, then rents/leases it to M-Net.

As far as I know they are partly going to use it to provide internet but also to support the sending of your power/gas/water usage to central servers so they don't have to have someone come around and read the meters (or have you fill out them cards they send out once a year).
A welcome change if you ask me.

It will increase the dsl speeds substantially, both upload and download, the external cables will be either copper or aluminium at present, fibre optic cables are replacing them and that is a good thing, your internal cables will remain copper or aluminium unless the owners of the building upgrade to fibre.
You will have to subscribe to get these higher speeds, so if you do not want to download any faster than your present speed, or upload big files ie photos to a server somewhere, then I would not subscribe, good to know it is there just in case though,

Aluminum cables? Don't they only use those on airplanes were weigh is a concern as copper weighs more.
They are also used for high voltage power cables. So unless you have 230kv running thru your DSL line
then its going to be copper, not Aluminum...

As far as the meter reading over the internet, Yellow Strom already have this. They replace your old meter
with a smart meter. It connects to the inside of your home with Ethernet over power. Once inside your house
you plug an adapter into any power socket then into your DSL box or switch and it communicates directly to
the YS servers.
