Day trip? No chance. Too far.

The answer to your question however is "train" with the Schönes Wochenende Ticket.

3:05 hours from Munich to Mannheim by ICE.

That's nice. Unfortunately the Rhine Valley is an hour and a half north of Mannheim.

There are at least three "Rhine valleys", one of them being in Switzerland...

The Rhine flows through Mannheim. Or do you mean the Mosel or a specific part of the Rhine valley?

Thanks for the correction. Infact, Koblenz or Mainz are recommended starting points to tour Rhine Valley. ICE to Koblenz takes 4:05 hours and not cheap.

When anyone says "Rhine Valley", I just assume they mean Bingen and surroundings. The Lorelei and castles and whatnot.

Wikipedia, somewhat optimistically, calls it the Rhine Gorge, while to UNESCO it's the Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

I think that's a reasonable assumption to make. Was only being finicky...

So the real answer is to either make it a full weekend trip (including a night or two in a hotel), or take the ICE and it'll be a very long expensive day.
