Watch TV: children's shows, advertisements, game shows, films you've already seen. The latter since you'll be able to follow along since you've already seen it, the rest because they tend to use very simple language. I learned a lot of words from Ruck Zuck. Rocket German is an excellent resource for getting up and running in the language in no time. Their highly recommended interactive audio course can be downloaded here: Rocket German.

Once your German is a little more advanced you could focus more on fun colloquial German, idioms and slang. My German girlfriend and I produce a free lesson for download each week on our website Pukka German. Feedback is always appreciated.

All the best,
